Turn on the tap, it’s World Plumbing Day
Observed each year on March 11, this international event was initiated by the World Plumbing Council – to cast a bright spotlight on the important role that plumbing plays in our health and safety. Clean drinking water. Proper sanitation. Hygiene. We often take all of these for granted. But we shouldn’t. In many developing countries, they are considered luxuries. Join Wavin in raising awareness about how even the simplest plumbing solutions can make all the difference and, yes, even save lives.
Some sobering statistics
Did you know that 650,000,000 people do not have access to safe water? That’s 1 in 10 people. According to the World Health Organization, 2.4 billion people do not have access to a toilet. That’s 1 in 3 people. And sadly, 315,000 children die each year from diseases caused by contaminated water and poor sanitation. What a difference an effective plumbing infrastructure would make to these people!
This is precisely why we celebrate World Plumbing Day. It’s important to remind ourselves that there is so much work that still needs to be done – especially in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia where 319 million and 260 milion (respectively) have no access to safe drinking water. For those of us living in the developed world, we can count ourselves as pretty lucky. We enjoy clean water and excellent sanitation. When there’s a plumbing problem, we immediately call our plumber who is usually available 24/7. The critical role that the plumbing industry (and plumbers, in particular) plays in contributing to our health and safety is often misunderstood or underestimated.
Wavin celebrates all plumbersAt Wavin, Water management is our business. Our innovative piping solutions are the lifesource which enables us to provide homes, buildings, villages and cities with safe drinking water and effective sanitation. As such, we work closely with plumbers and installers and we know, firsthand, how valuable they are to society as a whole. In fact, we hold them in such high regard that we launched our Gear Up plumbing campaign throughout Europe, just this past September. The campaign was the first of its kind in the industry and it was a resounding success. We expect to make it a recurring event as we continue to highlight the importance of good plumbing (and good plumbers!) to our safety and well-being.
For us at Wavin, every day is World Plumbing Day. We encourage you to promote plumbers and the importance of plumbing by talking about it, writing about it and maybe even organizing an event in your community – focusing on some aspect of water safety.
But most importantly, remember to give your plumber a hug. Or a hearty handshake. At the very least, a sincere “Thank You.” It’s always nice to be appreciated.
