Hygiene first at Rotterdam’s Maasstad Hospital
Opened in 2010, Rotterdam’s Maasstad Hospital soon established itself as one of the most advanced in the Netherlands. The hospital has 620 beds and the campus covers 100,000 m2. Wavin was involved from the earliest stages of planning and design which began in 2005. The design team set demanding targets for sustainability, ease-of-installation and cost-efficiency. Not surprisingly, however, hygiene was the top priority and the Wavin Tigris system met all requirements in full.
The Maasstad Hospital campus is like a small self-contained town, with wards, operating theatres, administrative offices along with shops, cafes and public walkways.
This busy hospital must maintain the highest standards for hygiene. The design and implementation of the hot and cold water systems is particularly important in the drive to minimize the risk from water-borne Legionella bacteria.
While seeking to maximize the safety of their chosen systems, the hospital would also need to ensure that installation was a quick and cost-effective as possible. Name/role/company (still to be confirmed) explains why the design team chose Wavin Tigris for all hot and cold water systems, “Tigris gave us both the 70°C temperature resistance of the original copper pipe specification and the speed, convenience and reliability of push-fit fittings.”
Tigris gave us both the 70 degree temperature resistance of the original copper pipe specification and the speed, convenience and reliability of push-fit fittings.
Wavin Tigris also made it possible to pre-configure many system components off-site, and this was particularly appreciated in making installation faster, easier and more cost-effective.
Architects EGM did not just specify Wavin for the hot and cold water systems. The Maasstad Hospital also features extensive green roof areas, and here too the team thought carefully about water management. The hospital uses Wavin QuickStream siphonic roof drainage systems. This ensures controlled dispersal in even the heaviest downpour, and also helps to minimize the width and number of downpipes required.
