Bringing fibre to Swedish communities
East Amtervik in the Sunne region of south west Sweden is a small rural community with fewer than one thousand properties. Bringing high-performance broadband to such communities can be a challenge. In East Amtervik, people decided to solve it for themselves, with the foundation of Emterviksfiber – a cooperative cable venture. Bringing broadband to East Amtervik makes it a better place to live and work, and will help attract new visitors and residents.
The Emterviksfiber initiative is one of the largest and most significant village community projects in Sweden. Three local communities are working together in the Emterviksfiber initiative to bring broadband to residents and businesses in this sparsely populated region.
Overall, the cooperative will install around 350 kilometres of optical cable. All the required cable ducting is supplied by Wavin. The plan uses three different diameters of ducting, allowing cable to be carried to the most remote properties at the lowest possible cost.

Numerous local and national suppliers are working together on this project, with members of the local community taking an active part themselves. When trenches for the duct, for example, are excavated, then property owners themselves are helping to bypass fences and plan and clear the route.
The project is happening quickly. Work on the backbone began in autumn 2012 and all will be completed in October 2013. Building out from the backbone, the cooperative will lay an additional 120 kilometres of ducting while the municipality will add 60 kilometres to the local grid. Wavin ducting allows cable to be blown over exceptional distances, speeding installation and simplifying layout and design.
Leif Ostlund, Emterviksfiber project manager, values Wavin’s contribution to this team effort, “Virtually all 967 properties in our area will benefit from broadband access, and Wavin’s advice and product excellence has helped make this possible.”
